Top NLUs in India: NIRF Law Ranking, CLAT vs AILET and How to Choose

For law aspirants, the dream usually has three letters: NLU. But with 26 National Law Universities and dozens of private law schools competing for attention, how do you decide where to aim? This guide uses the latest published NIRF data to introduce the top NLUs in India, explains which entrance exam each one accepts and shows how to build a smart college list before CLAT 2027 on 6 December.

Top Law Colleges in India: NIRF 2025 Law Ranking

The Ministry of Education released the NIRF 2025 law ranking on 4 September 2025, and it remains the latest list while NIRF 2026 is awaited. NLSIU Bengaluru topped it for the eighth year in a row.

NIRF rank Law school Location Entrance exam
1 NLSIU Bengaluru Karnataka CLAT
2 NLU Delhi Delhi AILET
3 NALSAR Hyderabad Telangana CLAT
4 WBNUJS Kolkata West Bengal CLAT
5 GNLU Gandhinagar Gujarat CLAT

NLSIU scored 82.97 and NLU Delhi 80.00 in this list. Further down, Siksha O Anusandhan in Bhubaneswar entered the top 10 at rank 10 as a private institution, and IIT Kharagpur reached the top 10 for the first time.

Key Facts From the Latest Law Ranking

  • 267 law schools took part in the 2025 NIRF law category.
  • 13 NLUs made it into the top 40, out of 26 in total.
  • NLU Delhi has held rank 2 every year since the category began in 2018.
  • Several private law schools also rank well, so an NLU is not the only strong route.

CLAT vs AILET: Which Exam Do You Need?

Most NLUs admit through CLAT, run by the Consortium of NLUs. NLU Delhi and NLU Meghalaya are exceptions and conduct their own entrance tests, and NLU Delhi uses AILET. If NLU Delhi is on your wish list, you need to prepare for and apply to both exams separately. Check dates and forms on consortiumofnlus.ac.in and nludelhi.ac.in.

How to Choose the Right NLU

A rank is a starting point, not the entire story. NIRF itself suggests reading rankings along with fees, location and accreditation. Use this checklist:

  1. Look at your realistic rank band. Shortlist a mix of reach, target and safe options.
  2. Compare total cost, including tuition, hostel and living expenses, and check scholarships. See our scholarships guide for funding ideas.
  3. Study placements and internships. Ask about recruiters, internship rules and moot court culture.
  4. Check approvals. The law course should be recognised by the Bar Council of India.
  5. Think about city and specialisation. Corporate, litigation, tech law and policy opportunities differ by location.

Common Mistakes Law Aspirants Make

  • Chasing only the top three NLUs and ignoring strong alternatives
  • Missing a separate application, such as AILET
  • Ignoring counselling rules and seat-lock deadlines
  • Relying on rumours instead of official data
